Death Comes Stalking!
Sidney had felt death stalking her for about a decade. At the age of about 28 she was assaulted and strangled and almost raped and murdered on the dark beaches of Santa Monica one horror filled night. The murderer strangled her the harder she fought. Sidney realized if he pressed just a fraction of an inch more on her throat she would be dead in an instant. At that moment she realized the difference between life and death is just a second. She didn’t even think to call out to God to help her. But Jesus intervened anyway. The more she fought the farther out nearer the ocean in the darkness the rapist threw her.
She realized she could fight no more or else she would be dead. He would strangle her in cold blood with no remorse. A miracle of hope happened. Beyond hope 2 ‘men’ appeared walking in the lamplight way across the beach. She cried out. They stopped and looked. All of a sudden a force, an invisible angel, threw the murderer off of her. She ran to the men who had saved her life that fateful night. One of the men, a guardian angel, just disappeared. Jesus had saved her life. The murderer was caught by the police immediately and prosecuted.
Have you ever wondered how many times God saved your life? More often than we imagine I think. Was there a time your life was unexpectedly or miraculously spared?
“Please write to me and let me know”, Sidney askes.
However for a decade fear of death haunted Sidney. She could feel death coming for her. We all have a date with destiny. Death is coming for all of us some day. But God was merciful. God gave her time. At about the age of 38 she was diagnosed with a highly malignant aggressive premenopausal breast cancer with cancer dna, estrogen receptor negative. The kind that kills the young ladies fast. She started chemotherapy treatment with surgery and radiation immediately. During that year of high dose chemo she had time to make peace with God. There is only One Way. That is through Jesus.
So, feeling life draining from her body she began to contemplate the nature of reality. The existence of God, an eternal soul and life after death. And the hope of heaven. She rejected atheism as no one has been to the far reaches of the universe of universes in all it’s dimensions. Therefore she could not prove the non existence of God. Sidney grieved in torment because her babies were still little and she knew she was leaving them. Only death could drag her away from her babies. She did not want to die and leave them to grow up without their mother. Plus, in a strange sense it was as if she could sense a place called ‘outer darkness’, where she was headed.
So, alone in that room, one fateful day she called out to Jesus from a broken body and a broken heart. “Jesus, if you’re real, please get me to heaven and get my children and husband there someday too; after they have a long good life.” At that very moment, that nano second, Jesus took all fear of death out of Sidney. He put in the Hope of Heaven, a better world to come, inside of her.
Jesus made Sidney a Bible Scholar at that moment too.
I Became a Bible Scholar on My Deathbed
You could say I fell in love with Jesus at that very moment. I fell in love with that Man Who Died on the Cross. He defeated death on that day 2,000 years ago. Some great day that Son of Man will come again to destroy death forever. Jesus will make everything right in this world on that great day. I knew I had no power to get myself to heaven. I knew the only thing in the universe that mattered at that point in my life is my relationship with Him. He said He has the power to get a person to heaven. I needed to know this Man more. I wanted to gaze into the afterlife, heaven. I loved Jesus so much. I want that love to last forever, and it will. He says He has the power to get you to heaven. And I know that’s true.
My desire is to know Him and the power of His resurrection. This became my all consuming passion in life. Somehow I had a Bible in my house. How it got there I had no idea. I picked it up and started reading. I also spent hours just talking to God, begging Him for my life. Also, I was so sorry about how I had lived, not knowing God. I spent years repenting too. This was my motivation to study Scripture. The Oracle of God. The Truth. Here is a verse that explains what happened to me when Jesus saved my soul. He took fear of death away and set me free.
Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying. (From Hebrews 2:15 NLT)
The paradise garden of God. So, there I was getting weaker and sicker with cancer and chemo. Yet Somehow God’s Spirit gave me understanding to look into Sacred Writ. My favorite verses about heaven that brought me the greatest peace at this point was:
Jesus uttered the most beautiful words ever spoken as He hung dying on the cross. ”I tell you the truth, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” (From Luke 23:43b)
“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” (From Revelation 21:4b NKJV)
“….I will give the privilege of eating the fruit of the Tree of Life, which is in the Paradise of God.’”
I’m a hard core Bible Scholar. As you know after that the Son of God touched me from heaven and infused me with life and blew cancer and death out of my body. I’m a sign of the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus has given me a gift to read, understand the Oracles of God. I thank Him. At times over the years that gift was gone. That was during the years my husband’s illness became apparent. During the time period he was dying. My life was destroyed, but God preserved me and has renewed me once again. John the Baptist said, “A person can receive nothing unless it is given to them from heaven.” What can I say other than thank-you Jesus. May I honor You my Master.
